Day 1 Tuesday
Today we depart Brisbane and travel via the Pacific Motor Way to the small township of Billinudgel which is the home of Old M. A. Ring’s pub and the Humble Pie shop. Here you can enjoy a cuppa and muffin or scone for morning tea. We then travel through Ocean Shores, Brunswick Heads and Byron Bay, including the Byron Bay Light House which is Australia’s most easterly mainland point. Lunch today is at the Byron Bay RSL club. A short drive to Lennox Head and we see the amazing red water of Lake Ainsworth. Thursday Plantation at Ballina is a fantastic way to end the day with a stroll around the gardens and check out the many therapeutic products on offer. Now it’s off to Lismore and time to check in to our motel where we’ll spend the next 3 nights.
Day 2 Wednesday
This morning we travel through the cane fields of Coraki and make our way to the coastal village of Evans Head, where we visit the Evans Head Air Museum which is home of an F-111 fighter jet and many other aircraft. After a short drive to the Glen Ian Ostrich and Emu Farm we have a guided tour of the property and lunch on the farm. The Scottish township of Maclean with its Tartan painted power poles and great look-out is also a wonderful sight to see. On our way home this afternoon we pause at New Italy to see some history dating back to 1882 when the area was first settled. We also visit the souvenir shop where Ian O’driscoll creates fantastic Glass Art.
Day 3 Thursday
This morning takes us on a scenic drive to Nimbin, where we pass through Rock Valley which is host to the smallest post office in Australia. While in Nimbin we view some 11th century candle making techniques and have a demonstration on the art of candle making. From Nimbin we travel to The Channon and the Macadamia Plantations of Dunoon then to the Summerland House with No Steps, which is a work place specializing in opportunities for the disabled. Here we have a Tractor Farm Tour and lunch at the well known restaurant. This afternoon you will have time to explore the shops of Lismore or maybe a walk across the street to the Lismore Workers Club.
Day 4 Friday
After a wonderful few days away, we depart Lismore and travel via the Tweed Valley Way to Murwillumbah where we enjoy morning tea at the Tweed Regional Art Gallery and home of the Margaret Olley Exhibition. Here we see the recreation of Margaret’s home studio including windows doors and 20,000 items collected by Margaret over the years. On display here are many of Margaret’s art works alongside other great artists. After a leisurely drive through Terranora we enjoy lunch at Seagulls Star Buffet then it’s a short trip home with lots of wonderful memories to share with family and friends.
